The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.

Week 24 overview
There were three Video Reviews during Week 24.

NC vs WAS: No goal (offside)

Outcome: After review, North Carolina #15 [Payton Linnehan] was in an offside position when the ball was passed to her by North Carolina #25 [Meredith Speck]. North Carolina #15 then interfered with play when she scored a goal.

The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to Washington Spirit].

Length of Review: 2:10

PRO’s opinion: At the moment the ball was crossed, Linnehan (NC) was in an offside position. The referee was correct to disallow the goal for the offside offense after video review.

UTA vs SD: No penalty

Outcome: After review, Utah #10 [Claudia Zornoza] did not foul San Diego #88 [Dudinha] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty, and play restarted with a drop ball [to Utah Royals].

Length of Review: 1:46

PRO’s opinion: The referee awarded a penalty kick because she believed that Zornoza (UTA) was unsuccessful in playing the ball when she reached for it with her left foot and instead tripped Dudinha (SD). The VAR analyzed the available angles and determined that Zornoza had played the ball cleanly before the contact with Dudinha. The referee was correct to rescind the penalty kick after video review.

LA vs HOU: No penalty

Outcome: After review, LA #15 [Evelyn Shores] did not commit a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty, and play was restarted with a drop ball [to Angel City].

Length of Review: 2:08

PRO’s opinion: The referee believed that the ball had struck Shores’ (LA) left arm, which was above her shoulder, directly from Avery Patterson’s (HOU) shot, and awarded a penalty kick for handball. The VAR analyzed the available angles and determined that the ball struck the defender’s chest first and that this was a successful block. The referee was correct to rescind the penalty kick after video review.
