The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.

Week 12 overview
There was one Video Review during Week 12.

NC vs WAS: No goal (encroachment)

Outcome: After review, North Carolina #20 [Shinomi Koyama] encroached within one meter of the wall prior to North Carolina #2 [Ashley Sanchez] scoring a goal from a direct free kick.

The final decision was no goal and an indirect free kick [to Washington Spirit].

Length of Review: 2:20

PRO’s opinion: Koyama (NC) was positioned within one meter of the Washington Spirit defensive wall when the direct free kick was taken. Under the Laws of the Game, all attacking players must remain at least one meter from a wall formed by three or more defending players until the ball is in play. PRO continues to use a high line of intervention. While Koyama came within one meter of the defensive wall, there was no impact on the wall or any other opponent, and as such, PRO would have preferred that no video review was recommended. Once at the monitor, the referee is expected to come to the best decision for the game, and while technically, the referee was not incorrect to disallow the goal, the best outcome would have been to maintain the original decision.
