The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.
Matchday 30 overview
There were five Video Reviews during Matchday 30.
DAL vs LAFC: No penalty kick
Outcome: After review, Los Angeles #14 [Sergi Palencia] did not foul Dallas #23 [Logan Farrington] inside the penalty area.
The final decision was no penalty and a drop ball [to FC Dallas]
Length of Review: 2:37
PRO’s opinion: The referee awarded a penalty kick because, from his angle, he believed that Palencia (LAFC) did not play the ball and tripped Farrington (DAL) inside the penalty area. The contact occurred outside the penalty area, and only after Palencia had cleanly played the ball. He was correct to rescind the penalty kick and yellow card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity while attempting to play the ball after video review.
SD vs POR: No goal (offside)
Outcome: After review, San Diego #10 [Anders Dreyer] was in an offside position when the ball was passed to him by San Diego #21 [Corey Baird]. San Diego #10 then interfered with play when he touched the ball prior to scoring a goal.
The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to Portland Timbers].
Length of Review: 2:18
PRO’s opinion: At the moment the ball was played to Dreyer (SD), he was in an offside position. The referee was correct to disallow the goal for the offside offense after video review.
The final decision was no penalty.
Length of Review: 1:36
The final decision was a penalty [to Vancouver Whitecaps].
Length of Review: 3:09
PRO’s opinion: Joyner’s (STL) left knee clipped Laborda’s (VAN) right foot and this made him kick his own calf on his other leg during his next stride, causing him to go to ground.
In real-time, the referee saw that there was no secondary action from the defender, and the two players were running normally; however, the VAR determined that Laborda was going to gain control of the ball, and the contact from behind had an impact. The referee awarded penalty kick after video review.
The final decision was no penalty and a drop ball [to New York Red Bulls]
Length of Review: 1:53
PRO’s opinion: There was contact inside the penalty area between Edwards (RBNY) and Bronico (CLT) and the attacker went to ground. The referee awarded a penalty because he saw that Edwards was unsuccessful in playing the ball and tripped Bronico. The VAR recommended a video review after he had analyzed the available angles and determined that Bronico opened his right leg out and initiated contact with Edwards. The referee was correct to rescind the penalty kick after video review.
