The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.
Week 15 overview
There were four Video Reviews during Week 15.
KC vs LOU: Penalty kick
Outcome: After review, Kansas City #31 [Katie Scott] fouled Louisville #13 [Emma Sears] inside the penalty area.
The final decision was a penalty kick [to Racing Louisville] and a yellow card to Kansas City #31 for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity while attempting to play the ball.
Length of Review: 3:56
PRO’s opinion: Scott (KC) challenged Sears (LOU) inside the penalty area, tripping her and forcing her to the ground. The referee was correct to award a penalty kick and issue a yellow card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity while attempting to play the ball after video review.
BAY vs GFC: No goal (offside)
Outcome: After review, Bay #5 [Karlie Lema] was in an offside position when the ball was played to her by Bay #29 [Jordan Silkowitz]. Bay #5 then interfered with an opponent when she challenged Gotham #27 [Jess Carter] prior to Bay #47 [Kennedy Fuller] scoring a goal.
The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to Gotham FC].
Length of Review: 5:02
PRO’s opinion: When Silkowitz (BAY) cleared the ball upfield, Lema (BAY) was in an offside position. The touch by Jordynn Dudley (GFC) was a deflection and not a deliberate play, as she instinctively stretched for a bouncing ball and had insufficient time to coordinate her body movement. That touch did not reset the attacking possession phase, and Lema gained an advantage by interfering with Carter (GFC) when challenging for the ball. The referee was correct to disallow the goal after video review.
The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to Seattle Reign].
Length of Review: 3:20
The final decision was a goal [to Boston Legacy].
Length of Review: 1:35
