Silviu Petrescu and MLS All-Star referee Chris Penso got Week 27 under way in midweek, and now we look to another action-packed MLS weekend.

Alan Kelly, MLS Referee of the Year, has the whistle for Friday’s game, where he’ll be supported by Kyle Atkins, Oscar Mitchell-Carvalho and Sorin Stoica when Sporting Kansas City take on Houston Dynamo.

Vancouver Whitecaps travel to Columbus Crew for the first of seven Saturday games, and the ‘Caps were in focus with PRO’s Play of the Week 27, looking at recognizing challenges.

Dave Gantar, the fourth official involved in the incident, returns to action – he’ll support Drew Fischer, Jeremy Hanson and Phil Briere when Portland Timbers welcome Real Salt Lake to Providence Park.

Play of the Week 26: Recognizing challenges

Five games are sandwiched in between, including home match-ups for US Open Cup finalists New England Revolution and FC Dallas. Juan Guzman referees the Revs against New York City, while Robert Sibiga has been assigned to FC Dallas versus Colorado Rapids.

The referee for the midweek showpiece is Baldomero Toledo, and he’ll warm up for the Final by taking the whistle for San Jose Earthquakes against Avaya Stadium.

Elsewhere, Armando Villarreal referees Philadelphia Union versus Montreal Impact and Marcos Deoliveira gets his third assignment of the year when Chicago Fire take on Toronto FC at 8:30pm.

A Sunday double-header sees Jair Marrufo taking charge of the match-up between New York Red Bulls and DC United, before Ismail Elfath closes Week 27 out – LA Galaxy host Orlando City at StubHub Center in a 7pm ET kick-off.
