Play of the week: CHI vs NE

This week’s Play of the week with Training & Development Manager Paul Rejer is taken from the match between Chicago Fire and New England Revolution.

The play features the Offside Law and one of the three definitions of when a player can be active by interfering with an opponent.

Paul explained: “When the ball is played into the penalty area, Chicago Fire’s Juan Luis Anangono is in an offside position; he then proceeds to challenge an opponent [Goncalves] which allows the ball to run into the path of Mike Magee, who slots the ball home.

“In these instances, ARs have to be focused on the player in the offside position and then have to track him. If that player subsequently plays the ball (interfering with play) or challenges an opponent (interfering with an opponent) he should then raise his flag as the offside player, as in this case, Anangono, should be penalized for being offside.”
