The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Matchday 12 overview
There were four Video Reviews during Matchday 12.

CHI vs RBNY: Penalty kick

Outcome: After review, Chicago #1 [Chris Brady] fouled New York #15 [Adri Mehmeti] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was penalty kick [to Red Bull New York].

Length of Review: 4:04

PRO’s opinion: Brady (RBNY) dived at the feet of Mehmeti (RBNY), and the attacker went down. The referee allowed play to continue because he believed the goalkeeper had touched the ball. The VAR identified that Brady had not made contact with the ball but instead tripped his opponent. The referee correctly awarded a penalty after video review.

NSH vs DC: Goal (no offside)

Outcome: After review, no offside offense was committed by D.C. #8 [Jared Stroud] before D.C. United #3 [Lucas Bartlett] scored a goal.

The final decision was a goal [to D.C. United].

Length of review: 3:25

PRO’s opinion: Bartlett (DC) headed the ball into the goal from a corner. His teammate, Stroud (DC), was standing in an offside position near the goalkeeper, Brian Schwake (NSH). The assistant referee believed that Stroud had interfered with Schwake’s ability to make a play on the ball, so the referee disallowed the goal for offside, interfering with an opponent. The VAR determined that while Stroud was standing in an offside position, he was to Schwake’s right and not blocking his view of the ball or interfering with his ability to attempt a save. The referee was correct to award the goal after video review.

NSH vs DC: No goal (offside)

Outcome: After review, Nashville #4 [Jeisson Palacios] was in an offside position when the ball was passed to him by Nashville #7 [Cristian Espinoza]. Nashville #4 then interfered with play when he touched the ball prior to scoring a goal.

The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to D.C. United].

Length of Review: 1:30

PRO’s opinion: At the moment the free kick was taken by Espinoza (NSH), Palacios (NSH) was in an offside position. The referee was correct to disallow the goal for the offside offense after video review.

MIN vs ATX: Encroachment

Outcome: After review, there was encroachment by Austin #1 [Brad Stuver] and Minnesota #13 [Anthony Markanich].

The final decision was to retake the penalty kick.

Length of review: 2:50

PRO’s opinion: Before Kelvin Yeboah (MIN) took the penalty kick, Stuver (ATX) had moved forward with both feet clearly in front of the goal line and then saved the penalty. The rebound was then played by Markanich (MIN) before a goal was scored by Nicolás Romero (MIN), and the referee awarded the goal. The VAR determined that Markanich had also encroached before the kick was taken and became directly involved in play, with a goal as the outcome. When a player from both teams has encroached on the taking of a penalty kick that is saved, a retake is the correct outcome.
