The Definitive Angle: MLS Week 37

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Week 37 overview
There were four Video Reviews during Week 37.

VAN vs MIN: Foul (no goal)

What happened: After review, Vancouver #25 [Ryan Gauld] committed a foul on Minnesota #11 [Jeong Sang-Bin] prior to the own goal by Minnesota #4 [Miguel Tapias].

The final decision was no goal and a direct free kick [to Minnesota United].

Length of Review: 3:05

PRO’s opinion: Before the shot from Sam Adekugbe (VAN), which was deflected into his own net by Miguel Tapias (MIN), Gauld (VAN) did not play the ball but rather made contact with Sang-Bin’s (MIN) leg. The referee was correct to disallow the goal for the foul because Gauld’s action had a clear impact.

ATL vs RBNY: Penalty

What happened: After review, New York #3 [Noah Eile] fouled Atlanta #29 [Jamal Thiaré] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty [to Atlanta United].

Length of Review: 4:49

PRO’s opinion: Eile’s (RBNY) hold had an impact on the forward progress of Thiaré (ATL), and he went to ground. The referee was correct to maintain his decision to award a penalty because there was a clear action by Eile, who had overrun the ball, to make contact with Thiaré.

ATL vs RBNY: Offside (no goal)

What happened: After review, New York #11 [Elias Manoel] was in an offside position prior to scoring a goal. New York #11 then interfered with play when he touched the ball.

The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to Atlanta United].

Length of Review: 2:10

PRO’s opinion: Manoel (RBNY) was in an offside position when the ball was last played by Daniel Edelman (RBNY). While the camera angles were not precisely in line, the proximity of the attacker and defender, along with the shaded lines in the turf, made this decision clear and obvious. The referee was correct to disallow the goal for the offside offense.

LA vs ATX: No penalty kick

What happened: After review, Austin #5 [Jhojan Valencia] did not foul Los Angeles #9 [Dejan Joveljic] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty. Play restarted with a drop ball [to Austin FC].

Length of Review: 1:59

PRO’s opinion: Valencia (ATX) reached forward with his foot toward the ball but was unsuccessful in playing it. Having planted his foot, Joveljic (LA) then made contact with Valencia’s foot and went to ground. The referee was correct to rescind the penalty kick after video review because Joveljic initiated the contact.
