The Definitive Angle: NWSL Week 18

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.

Week 18 overview
There were four Video Review during Week 18.

LA vs SEA: Penalty

What happened: After review, Los Angeles #13 [DiDi Haracic] fouled Seattle #9 [Jordyn Huitema] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty kick [to Seattle Reign].

Length of Review: 2:31

PRO’s opinion: Haracic (LA) dove toward the ball but didn’t manage to play it, instead tripping Huitema (SEA), who had taken a touch past the goalkeeper and into space. This was a foul and a penalty kick.

LA vs SEA: Foul (no goal)

What happened: After review, Los Angeles #2 [Sydney Leroux] fouled Seattle #13 [Julia Lester] in the buildup to the goal by Los Angeles #99 [Madison Hammond].

The final decision was a direct free kick [to Seattle Reign].

Length of Review: 3:22

PRO’s opinion: Lester (SEA) was tripped by Leroux (LA) but still managed to play the ball. The referee allowed play to continue, not believing the contact to be impactful, but after review, correctly identified an offense had been committed.

SD vs NC: Red card (DOGSO)

What happened: After review, San Diego #1 [Kailen Sheridan] fouled North Carolina #23 [Bianca St-Georges] outside the penalty area.

The final decision was a direct free kick [to North Carolina Courage] and a red card to San Diego #1 for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

Length of review: 2:40

PRO’s opinion: Sheridan (SD) was late to the ball and tripped St-Georges (NC), who had played the ball past the goalkeeper, who, at the point of contact, was outside of the penalty area. This was a denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, and a red card was correctly issued.

SD vs NC: Goal

What happened: After review, North Carolina #25 [Meredith Speck] was onside when the ball was passed to her by North Carolina #20 [Olivia Wingate] before she scored a goal.

The final decision was goal [to North Carolina Courage].

Length of Review: 2:22

PRO’s opinion: The Assistant Referee incorrectly judged that Speck (NC) was in an offside position when Wingate (NC) crossed the ball. The referee was correct to award the goal because Speck was behind the ball when it was crossed in from the right.
