The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Matchday 26 overview
There were three Video Reviews during Matchday 26.

ORL vs TOR: No goal (offside)

Outcome: After review, Orlando #5 [Luis Otávio] was in an offside position when the ball was passed to him by Orlando #7 [Antoine Griezmann]. Orlando #5 then interfered with his opponent prior to Toronto #25 [Walker Zimmerman] scoring an own goal.

The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to Toronto FC].

Length of Review: 1:45

PRO’s opinion: At the moment the free kick was taken by Griezmann (ORL), Otávio (ORL) was in an offside position. He then interfered with the opponent when he challenged Zimmerman (TOR), who scored an own goal as a result. The referee was correct to disallow the goal for the offside offense after video review.

ORL vs TOR: No penalty

Outcome: After review, Toronto #1 [Luka Gavran] did not foul Orlando #10 [Martín Ojeda] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty. Play restarted with a drop ball to Toronto #1 [Luka Gavran].

Length of Review: 1:16

PRO’s opinion: Gavran (TOR) clearly played the ball before making any contact with Ojeda (ORL), and all contact after the challenge was normal football contact. The referee was correct to rescind the penalty after video review.

SD vs PHI: Yellow card (reckless challenge)

Outcome: After review, San Diego #70 [Alejandro Alvarado] did not commit a violent conduct offense on Philadelphia #10 [Milan Iloski].

The final decision was a yellow card to San Diego #70 for a reckless challenge.

Length of Review: 2:50

PRO’s opinion: As the referee gave San Diego FC a free kick for a foul by Manu Duah (SD) on Iloski (PHI), Alvarado (SD) kicked the ball as the whistle was being blown, and it struck the attacker on the head. The kick of the ball was simultaneous with the blowing of the whistle and was not a violent conduct offense. The referee was correct to rescind the red card and issue a yellow card after video review.
