The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Matchday 23 overview
There were three Video Reviews during Matchday 23.

POR vs ATX: Penalty kick

Outcome: After review, Austin #4 [Brendan Hines-Ike] committed a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty kick [to Portland Timbers].

Length of Review: 1:30

PRO’s opinion: As Antony (POR) shot at goal, the ball struck the right arm of Hines-Ike (ATX), which was away from his body and made him unnaturally bigger, creating a barrier for the ball. The referee was correct to award a penalty kick after video review.

SD vs LA: No goal (foul)

Outcome: After review, Los Angeles #11 [Hirving Lozano] fouled San Diego #33 [Oscar Verhoeven] in the buildup to Los Angeles #7 [Kyōgo Furuhashi] scoring a goal.

The final decision was no goal and a direct free kick [to San Diego FC].

Length of Review: 2:16

PRO’s opinion: While challenging Verhoeven (SD), Lozano (LA) made impactful contact on his opponent’s left leg prior to touching the ball, which tripped him and forced him to ground. The referee was correct to disallow the goal for a foul in the attacking possession phase after video review.

CLB vs NE: No goal (offside)

Outcome: After review, New England #99 [Dor Turgeman] was in an offside position when the ball was passed to him by New England #10 [Carles Gil]. New England #99 then interfered with play when he touched the ball prior to scoring a goal.

The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to Columbus Crew].

Length of Review: 1:54

PRO’s opinion: With the broadcast camera in a good position to judge Turgeman’s (NE) position compared to that of the second-to-last opponent, Eric Bailly (CLB), the attacker was leaning ahead and nearest to the goal line and then interfered with play when he touched the ball.
