The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.
Week 11 overview
There were two Video Reviews during Week 11.
NC vs RGN: Penalty kick
Outcome: After review, Seattle #24 [Ryanne Brown] fouled North Carolina #35 [Ally Schlegel] inside the penalty area.
The final decision was a penalty kick [to North Carolina Courage] and a yellow card to Seattle #24 for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity while attempting to play the ball.
Length of Review: 1:46
PRO’s opinion: Brown (RGN) slid in and challenged Schlegel (NC) inside the penalty area, and the attacker went down. The defender did not make any contact with the ball, and the referee was correct to award a penalty kick and issue a yellow card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity while attempting to play the ball after video review.
CHI vs UTA: Penalty kick
Outcome: After review, Chicago #14 [Taylor Wood] fouled Utah #5 [Cece Delzer] inside the penalty area.
The final decision was a penalty kick [to Utah Royals].
Length of Review: 2:24
PRO’s opinion: Wood (CHI) challenged Delzer (UTA), and the attacker went down after the defender made contact with her left leg on her opponent’s right foot. Wood did not play the ball, and the contact tripped Delzer. The referee was correct to award a penalty kick after video review.
