The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Matchday 8 overview
There were two Video Reviews during Matchday 8.

TOR vs ATX: Red card (violent conduct)

Outcome: After review, Austin #20 [Nicolás Dubersarsky] did not commit a violent conduct offense on Toronto #44 [Raheem Edwards].

The final decision was a yellow card to Austin #20 for a reckless challenge.

Length of review: 1:50

PRO’s opinion: From the referee’s angle, he believed Dubersarsky (ATX) used his forearm and made contact with Edwards’ (TOR) chin, and a red card was issued for violent conduct. The VAR determined there was no contact to the face; only to the chest, which was not excessive. The referee was correct to rescind the red card and issue a yellow card for a reckless challenge after video review.

COL vs MIA: Penalty kick

Outcome: After review, Colorado #12 [Josh Atencio] fouled Miami #42 [Yannick Bright] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was penalty kick [to Inter Miami].

Length of Review: 3:03

PRO’s opinion: Atencio (COL) challenged Bright (MIA) but did not make contact with the ball. The VAR identified the tripping contact and recommended a review. The referee correctly awarded a penalty and issued a yellow card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity while challenging for the ball after video review.
