The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.
Week 2 overview
There were two Video Reviews during NWSL Week 2.
POR vs SEA: Red card (violent conduct)
Outcome: After review, Portland #2 [Reyna Reyes] committed a violent conduct offense on Seattle #24 [Madison Curry].
The final decision was a red card to Portland #2.
Length of review: 3:38
PRO’s opinion: Reyes (POR) and Curry (SEA) were challenging for a ball in the air close to the touchline when the defender pulled Curry’s hair. The VAR analyzed the available angles and identified the action that the referee had not seen. The referee was correct to issue a red card for violent conduct after video review.
HOU vs BOS: Penalty kick
Outcome: After review, Boston #16 [Jorelyn Carabalí] fouled Houston #25 [Makenzy Robbe] inside the penalty area.
The final decision was a penalty [to Houston Dash].
Length of Review: 2:03
PRO’s opinion: Carabalí (BOS) slid in to challenge Robbe (HOU) and the referee, believing the defender had played the ball, awarded a corner kick. The VAR analyzed the available angles and recommended a review for a penalty kick. While Carabalí had touched the ball, it would still have been in Robbe’s possession. It was determined that a tripping offence had occurred, and the referee correctly awarded a penalty kick after video review.
