The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Matchday 39 overview
There was one Video Review on October 8 and two Video Reviews during Matchday 39.

LAFC vs TOR: Red card (serious foul play)

Outcome: After review, Toronto #14 [Alonso Coello] committed a serious foul play offense on Los Angeles #16 [Jailson].

The final decision was a red card for serious foul play.

Length of review: 2:25

PRO’s opinion: In the final seconds of the game, Coello (TOR) reached for the ball but only made contact with the Jailson’s (LAFC) leg. The referee viewed the challenge as a careless foul and blew the final whistle. The VAR analyzed the available angles and determined that Coello made contact using his studs with Jailson’s calf and had endangered the safety of the opponent. The referee was correct to issue a red card for serious foul play.

SEA vs RSL: Penalty kick

Outcome: After review, Salt Lake #4 [Brayan Vera] tripped Seattle #13 [Jordan Morris] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty [to Seattle Sounders].

Length of Review: 2:35

PRO’s opinion: Morris (SEA) had taken a touch after receiving a pass inside the penalty area and was facing the goal when Vera (RSL) reached for the ball but was unsuccessful in playing it. Instead, he made contact with Morris’ leg and tripped him. The VAR analyzed the available angles and determined that there was a clear impact. The referee was correct to award a penalty kick for the foul after video review and to issue a yellow card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity while attempting to play the ball.

SEA vs RSL: No goal (offside)

Outcome: After review, Salt Lake #17 [Victor Olatunji] was in an offside position when the free kick was played to him by Salt Lake #10 [Diogo Gonçalves]. Salt Lake #17 then interfered with play when he headed the ball prior to Salt Lake #9 [William Agada] eventually scoring a goal.

The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to Seattle Sounders].

Length of Review: 1:29

PRO’s opinion: At the moment the free kick was taken, Olatunji (RSL) was in an offside position. The referee was correct to disallow the goal for the offside offense after video review.
