The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.

Week 14 overview
There was one Video Review during Week 14.

ORL vs UTA: No penalty

Outcome: After review, Utah #18 [Kaleigh Riehl] did not foul Orlando #22 [Barbra Banda] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty.

Length of Review: 4:03

PRO’s opinion: Banda (ORL) and Riehl (UTA) collided as they attempted to challenge for the ball after a pass forward by Julie Doyle (ORL). The VAR felt that Riehl had arrived late and had pulled Banda down and recommended the review for that reason. The referee deemed that the contact did not rise to the level of a foul and correctly maintained her original decision of no penalty after video review.

PRO would have preferred a more efficient process for this review. Prior to the possible penalty, the VAR had identified that Banda had committed an offside offense in the APP which would negate the potential penalty. In the end, no penalty is the correct decision, but the correct restart should have been an indirect free kick for the offside offense in the APP.
