The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.
Matchday 27 overview
There were five Video Reviews during Matchday 27.
CLB vs ORL: Penalty kick
Outcome: After review, Orlando #87 [Marco Pašalić] committed a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.
The final decision was a penalty kick [to Columbus Crew].
Length of review: 1:46
PRO’s opinion: Pašalić (ORL) attempted to block Dylan Chambost (CLB) cross, and it hit his left hand, which was outstretched and unnaturally away from his body. The referee correctly awarded a penalty kick after the video review.
SD vs NSH: Direct free kick
Outcome: After review, Nashville #25 [Walker Zimmerman] did not deny an obvious goal-scoring opportunity for San Diego #11 [Hirving Lozano].
The final decision was a direct free kick [to San Diego FC] and a yellow card to Nashville #25 for stopping a promising attack.
Length of Review: 3:39
PRO’s opinion: Zimmerman (NSH) was unsuccessful in playing the ball after he slid in to tackle Lozano (SD). He tripped the attacker and was issued a yellow card for stopping a promising attack. The VAR analyzed the available angles and determined that with Lozano’s direction to goal, Jeisson Palacios (NSH), the covering defender, would not have had an opportunity to defend and this denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. However, the heavy touch by Lozano made it possible that goalkeeper Joe Willis (NSH), who was outside his penalty area, could get control of the ball before the attacker. The referee correctly retained his original decision after video review.
The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to Austin FC].
Length of Review: 2:58
The final decision was a penalty kick [to Chicago Fire].
Length of review: 2:08
The final decision was a penalty kick [to Minnesota United].
Length of review: 2:52
