The Definitive Angle: NWSL Week 7

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.

Week 7 overview
There were four Video Reviews during Week 7.

WAS vs LA: No penalty

Outcome: After review, LA #16 [Mary Alice Vignola] did not foul Washington #21 [Gift Monday] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty, and play restarted with a drop ball [to Angel City].

Length of Review: 3:14

PRO’s opinion: After dribbling past two players into the penalty area, Monday (WAS) was off balance and falling to the ground when Vignola (LA) made a fair challenge for the ball. This was not a foul and the referee was correct to rescind the penalty after video review.

WAS vs LA: Goal (no offside)

Outcome: After review, no offside offense was committed by Washington #13 [Brittany Ratcliffe] before Washington #24 [Esme Morgan] scored a goal.

The final decision was a goal [to Washington Spirit].

Length of review: 3:05

PRO’s opinion: Ratcliffe (WAS) was not in an offside position when Gabrielle Carle (WAS) crossed the ball into the penalty area, nor was Morgan (WAS) from Ratcliffe’s header. The referee was correct to award the goal after video review.

UTA vs NC: Penalty

Outcome: After review, Utah #16 [Madison Pogarch] committed a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.

The final decision was penalty kick [to North Carolina Courage].

Length of review: 2:22

PRO’s opinion: The ball struck Pogarch’s (UTA) left hand, which was away from her body, and acted as a barrier in an attempt to block Manaka Matsukubo’s (NC) shot at goal. The referee was correct to award a penalty kick after video review.

GFC vs CHI: No penalty

Outcome: After review, Gotham #4 [Lilly Reale] did not foul Chicago #8 [Jameese Joseph] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty and play restarted with a drop ball [to NJ/NY Gotham].

Length of Review: 4:54

PRO’s opinion: This was not a tripping foul. Reale (GFC) made clear contact on the ball as part of her challenge on Joseph (CHI) and the referee was correct to rescind the penalty after video review.
