The Definitive Angle: NWSL Week 23

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.

Week 23 overview
There were six Video Reviews during Week 23.

CHI vs GFC: Penalty

What happened: After review, Chicago #4 [Cari Roccaro] fouled Gotham #13 [Ella Stevens] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty [to NJ/NY Gotham FC].

Length of Review: 1:39

PRO’s opinion: After initially slipping and not recovering her balance, Roccaro (CHI) slid with her right leg toward the ball and tripped Stevens (GFC). The challenge clearly impacted the attacker, and the referee correctly awarded a penalty after video review.

BAY vs KC: No penalty

What happened: After review, Kansas City #10 [Lo’eau LaBonta] did not commit a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty.

Length of Review: 3:38

PRO’s opinion: LaBonta (KC) jumped toward the ball, leading with her right foot, to block the play by Penelope Hocking (BAY). The ball bounced up unexpectedly and made contact with LaBonta’s left elbow. The referee was correct to maintain her decision not to award a penalty because LaBonta’s arms were in a justifiable position for her jumping movement, and she brought them toward her body at the last phase of this movement, not making herself unnaturally bigger. This was not a punishable handball offense.

BAY vs KC: Direct free kick and yellow card (stopping a promising attack)

What happened: After review, there was no denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by Kansas City #4 [Hailie Mace] on Bay #55 [Penelope Hocking].

The final decision was a yellow card to Kansas City #4 for stopping a promising attack. Play restarted with a direct free kick [to Bay Football Club].

Length of review: 4:59

PRO’s opinion: The referee was correct to maintain their decision to award a yellow card for stopping a promising attack because the incident did not meet all of the criteria for denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. Before the foul contact from Mace (KC), the last touch from Hocking (BAY) was away from the goal. In addition, another defender, Kayla Sharples (KC), was running at full speed to provide cover.

UTA vs SEA: No penalty

What happened: After review, there was no punishable offense committed by Utah #16 [Madison Pogarch] on Seattle #9 [Jordyn Huitema] because the ball was not in play.

The final decision was no penalty and a yellow card to Utah #16 for unsporting behavior. Play restarted with a corner kick [to Seattle Reign].

Length of review: 2:50

PRO’s opinion: This is a clear charging offense by Pogarch (UTA), which occurred after the referee proactively spoke with Huitema (SEA) and Pogarch and advised them to avoid off-the-ball contact. The referee was correct to award the yellow card for the offense. However, the ball was not yet in play from the corner kick when the incident occurred, and he correctly rescinded his decision to award a penalty kick after video review.

WAS vs LOU: Goal

What happened: After review, Louisville #9 [Kayla Fischer] did not commit an offside offense when the goal was scored by Louisville #13 [Emma Sears].

The final decision was goal [to Racing Louisville].

Length of Review: 2:04

PRO’s opinion: Although Fischer (LOU) was in an offside position when Sears (LOU) shot at goal, she did not make contact with the ball, interfere with goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury’s (WAS) line of vision or impact her ability to attempt a save and, therefore, did not commit an offside offense. The referee was correct to award a goal after video review.

SD vs HOU: Penalty

What happened: After review, San Diego #4 [Naomi Girma] fouled Houston #14 [Yūki Nagasato] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty [to Houston Dash] and a yellow card to San Diego #4 for a reckless challenge.

Length of Review: 3:55

PRO’s opinion: Girma’s (SD) challenge on Nagasato (HOU) was reckless and she did not make any contact on the ball. This is a clear foul and the referee correctly awarded a penalty after video review.
