The Definitive Angle: NWSL Week 10
The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.
Week 10 overview
There was one Video Review during Week 10, in the NWSL Challenge Cup.
POR vs LA: Review for penalty kick (foul challenge) – not given
What Happened: Alyssa Thompson (LA) was challenged in the penalty area by goalkeeper Shelby Ann Hogan (POR). Hogan initially made a fair challenge when Thompson tried to go around the goalkeeper, pushing the ball upfield. Both players attempted to gain possession of the loose ball and went to the ground. The referee did not identify an offense in real-time and allowed play to continue.
The VAR analyzed the available angles and determined that Thompson got to the ball first and that Hogan made no contact on the ball. He concluded that the non-awarding of a penalty kick was a clear and obvious error and recommended an on-field review. Following Video Review, the referee awarded a penalty kick.
On-field decision: Play on.
Type of review: Penalty kick.
Final decision after review: Penalty.
Length of review: 1:35.
PRO’s Opinion: This was a good, efficient use of the Video Review system to rectify a clear and obvious error.
