In week 16’s Play of the week, PRO Training & Development Manager Paul Rejer features an excellent example of pro-active player management.

This clip demonstrates quick thinking from the 4th official and effective all round teamwork by the match officials from the game between Colorado Rapids and San Jose Earthquakes.

Paul explains: “At 47.57 the ball leaves the field of play and heads towards the technical area at the feet of San Jose interim head coach Mark Watson who immediately kicks the ball towards Colorado’s Hendry Thomas who reacts by approaching him in an aggressive manner.

“4th Official Fotis Bazakos quickly forms a shield and stops substitutes from entering the field of play and Hendry Thomas reaching his intended destination. His intervention successfully prevented a possible a mass confrontation from developing and gave his colleagues time to arrive at the scene.

“Referee Jorge Gonzalez swiftly issues yellow cards to Thomas and Wondolowski, and AR1, CJ Morgante, further assisted with the calming down process. An impressive example of teamwork and pro-active player management preventing the need for any more disciplinary sanctions and saving players from fines/suspensions.”
