Paul said: “Alan Gordon and Victor Bernardez of San Jose Earthquakes left the field of play in the 61st minute to change their footwear. Law 4 specifies that if any players leave the field of play to correct their equipment they cannot re-enter until the ball is out of play.

“Vancouver scored an equalizing goal before the ball went out of play – against nine opponents. Therefore, the laws of the game were correctly adhered to.

“In the match between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain in the European Champions League this week, Dani Alves left the field of play in the 31st minute and he was also not allowed to return until the ball was next out of play. On that occasion, there was no goal scored.”
