The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.
Matchday 29 overview
There were three Video Reviews during Matchday 29.
SKC vs POR: Penalty kick
Outcome: After review, Kansas City #15 [Jansen Miller] fouled Portland #99 [Kristoffer Velde] inside the penalty area.
The final decision was a penalty kick [to Portland Timbers].
Length of Review: 2:48
PRO’s opinion: Miller (SKC) attempted to play the ball but only made contact with Velde’s (POR) leg, tripping him after the attacker had taken a touch. The referee was correct to award a penalty kick after video review.
COL vs SJ: No goal (offside)
Outcome: After review, San Jose #19 [Preston Judd] was in an offside position when the ball was passed to him by San Jose #14 [Ronaldo Vieira]. San Jose #19 then interfered with play when he touched the ball prior to scoring a goal.
The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to Colorado Rapids].
Length of Review: 1:51
PRO’s opinion: While his feet were in his own half, at the moment the ball was played to Judd (SJ) by Vieira (SJ), he was leaning into the attacking half of the field and was in an offside position. The referee was correct to disallow the goal for the offside offense after video review.
Outcome: After review, Philadelphia #10 [Milan Iloski] did not commit an attacker handball offense in the buildup to scoring a goal.
The final decision was a goal [to Philadelphia Union].
Length of Review: 5:04
PRO’s opinion: After Rafael Cabral (RSL) saved Frankie Westfield’s (PHI) shot, the ball popped up into the air in a crowded penalty area. Iloski (PHI) eventually scored after he had played it off his body. There was no contact with his arm. The referee was correct to award the goal after video review.
