The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.

Week 17 overview
There were four Video Reviews during Week 17.

GFC vs KC: Yellow card (unsporting behavior)

Outcome: After review, Kansas City #7 [Elizabeth Ball] did not commit a violent conduct offense on Gotham #2 [Jordynn Dudley].

The final decision was a yellow card to Kansas City #7 for unsporting behavior.

Length of Review: 4:59

PRO’s opinion: Ball (KC) pushed Dudley (GFC) as she attempted to get up from the ground, but the contact did not involve excessive force or brutality. The referee was correct to rescind the red card after video review.

GFC vs KC: No goal (offside)

Outcome: After review, Gotham #20 [Sam Kerr] committed an offside offense prior to Gotham #7 [Jaelin Howell] scoring a goal when she interfered with Kansas City #1 [Marisa Jordan]’s ability to defend.

The final decision was offside, and play restarted with an indirect free kick [to Kansas City Current].

Length of review: 4:18

PRO’s opinion: When Howell (GFC) shot at goal, Kerr (GFC) was in an offside position, in front of and in close proximity to the goalkeeper. The attacker obstructed Jordan’s (KC) line of vision, delaying her movement and preventing her from being able to play the ball. The referee was correct to disallow the goal and restart play with an indirect free kick for offside, interfering with an opponent.

UTA vs BAY: Encroachment

Outcome: After review, there was encroachment by Bay #29 [Jordan Silkowitz].

The final decision was to retake the penalty kick.

Length of Review: 2:21

PRO’s opinion: Jordan Silkowitz (BAY) moved off the goal line before the ball was kicked by Mina Tanaka (UTA), preventing the ball from entering the goal. The referee was correct to order a penalty retake after video review.

LA vs WAS: No goal

Outcome: After review, Los Angeles #24 [Prisca Chilufya] committed a punishable handball offense prior to Los Angeles #17 [Ally Sentnor] scoring a goal.

The final decision was no goal.

Length of Review: 2:43

PRO’s opinion: Although the ball deflected off the arm of Chilufya (LA) as she contested a header with Élisabeth Tsé (WAS), the position of her arm was justifiable due to the natural movement of the attacker when she jumped. The decision to disallow the goal after video review was subjective because the attacker’s infringement did not affect the outcome. PRO would have preferred that the goal be awarded.
