The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.

Week 9 overview
There were two Video Reviews during Week 9.

HOU vs SD: Yellow card (reckless challenge)

Outcome: After review, San Diego #15 [Trinity Byars] did not commit a serious foul play offense on Houston #1 [Jane Campbell].

The final decision was a yellow card to San Diego #15 for a reckless challenge.

Length of Review: 7:22 (includes time for medical treatment)

PRO’s opinion: Byars (SD) lost her balance after tripping over the foot of Allysha Chapman (HOU), leaving her unable to avoid the collision with Campbell (HOU). The contact occurred as a consequence of the defender attempting to shield her goalkeeper and was not a deliberate act by the attacker. The referee was correct to rescind the red card after video review.

BAY vs CHI: No goal (offside)

Outcome: After review, Bay #10 [Cristiana Girelli] committed an offside offense in the buildup to the goal by Bay #7 [Taylor Huff].

The final decision was offside and play restarted with an indirect free kick [to Chicago Stars].

Length of Review: 3:04

PRO’s opinion: Girelli (BAY) was in an offside position during the buildup to the goal but did not become involved in play or impact an opponent. This review should not have been recommended and the goal should not have been disallowed because the attacker did not commit an offside offense.
