The Definitive Angle: MLS Week 11

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Week 11 overview
There were two Video Reviews during Week 11.

CIN vs COL: Attacker handball (no goal)

What happened: Blue #7 [Yuya Kubo – FC Cincinnati] committed an attacker handball offense in the process of scoring a goal. Prior to the goal he was onside.

The final decision was that the goal [for FC Cincinnati] was disallowed. Play restarted with a direct free kick [to Colorado Rapids].

Length of review: 2:32

PRO’s opinion: The assistant referee had judged Kubo (CIN) to be in an offside position and delayed his flag until the ball was in the goal. The on-field decision of offside was incorrect and when checking the remainder of the APP, it was determined that Kubo had touched the ball with his hand immediately before scoring the goal. The referee was correct to disallow the goal for attacker handball. This was a good use of the Video Review system to rectify a clear and obvious error.

LAFC vs POR: Handball (no goal)

What happened: Black #11 [Timothy Tillman – Los Angeles Football Club] committed a handball offense when he controlled a pass in the build up to Black #99 [Denis Bouanga – Los Angeles Football Club] scoring a goal.

The final decision was that the goal [for Los Angeles Football Club] was disallowed. Play restarted with a direct free kick [to Portland Timbers].

Length of review: 1:27

PRO’s opinion: This was a deliberate handball offense in the APP by Tillman (LAFC), who used his arm to control the ball. This was a good, efficient use of the Video Review system to rectify a clear and obvious error.
