The Definitive Angle: MLS Matchday 6
The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.
Matchday 6 overview
There were two Video Reviews during Matchday 6.
NE vs RBNY: No penalty
Outcome: After review, the ball was out of play before New York #81 [Serge Ngoma] fouled New England #17 [Ignatius Ganago] inside the penalty area.
The final decision was no penalty and a goal kick [to New York Red Bulls].
Length of Review: 2:05
PRO’s opinion: The referee correctly awarded a penalty for a holding offense by Ngoma (NE) that continued into the penalty area. However, prior to the foul, the entire ball crossed the goal line after Dylan Nealis (RBNY) had challenged Ganago (NE). The referee was correct to rescind the penalty after video review.
NE vs RBNY: Penalty kick
Outcome: After review, New York #15 [Sean Nealis] fouled New England #17 [Ignatius Ganago] inside the penalty area.
The final decision was a penalty [to New York Red Bulls].
Length of Review: 2:04
PRO’s opinion: Although Ganago (NE) played the ball first, the referee believed that Nealis (RBNY) had got a touch on the ball and allowed play to continue. The VAR determined that Nealis did not play the ball and had committed a tripping offense, having arrived late. The referee was correct to award a penalty kick after video review.
