The Definitive Angle: MLS Week 5

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Matchday 5 overview
There were six Video Reviews during Matchday 5.

CLT vs SJ: Red card (DOGSO)

Outcome: After review, Charlotte #4 [Andrew Privett] fouled San Jose #19 [Preston Judd] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty [to San Jose Earthquakes] and a red card to Charlotte #4 for a holding offense with no attempt to play the ball which denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

Length of Review: 3:00

PRO’s opinion: Privett (CLT) held Judd (SJ) with both arms and forced him to ground, and the penalty decision was correct. The VAR recommended an on-field review because he believed the hold by Privett was part of a challenge for the ball, and this merited a yellow card and not a red card because the ball was in very close proximity. This is a subjective call, and the referee determined that the holding foul was not an attempt to challenge for the ball. He maintained his original decision to issue a red card for a holding offense with no attempt to play the ball which denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

MIN vs LA: Penalty kick

Outcome: After review, Los Angeles #4 [Maya Yoshida] committed a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty kick [to Minnesota United].

Length of review: 1:59

PRO’s opinion: This was a handball offense by Yoshida (LA), whose right arm acted as a barrier in an attempt to block Joseph Rosales’ (MIN) shot. The ball struck his hand and arm, which was high and away from his body. The referee was correct to award a penalty kick after video review.

RBNY vs TOR: Penalty kick

Outcome: After review, Toronto #2 [Henry Wingo] fouled New York #44 [Raheem Edwards] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty [to New York Red Bulls].

Length of Review: 3:58

PRO’s opinion: There was contact between Wingo (TOR) and Edwards (RBNY) as Wingo moved in close proximity to get in a better position to defend. He took a risk by running behind the attacker, and the contact impacted Edwards’s ability to continue. The referee was correct to award a penalty kick after video review.

CLB vs NYC: No goal (offside)

Outcome: After review, Columbus #12 [DeJuan Jones] was in an offside position in the buildup to the goal scored by Columbus #19 [Jacen Russell-Rowe]. Columbus #12 then interfered with play when he touched the ball.

The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to New York City FC].

Length of Review: 1:39

PRO’s opinion: At the moment the ball was played to Jones (CLB), he was in an offside position. The referee was correct to disallow the goal for the offside offense after video review.

RSL vs DAL: Red card (serious foul play)

Outcome: After review, Salt Lake #23 [Ariath Piol] committed a serious foul play offense on Dallas #6 [Patrickson Delgado].

The final decision was a red card for serious foul play.

Length of review: 2:48

PRO’s opinion: The referee had whistled for a holding foul just prior to this tackle and had not seen Piol’s (RSL) actions. The VAR determined that Piol went over the ball with a straight leg and made contact with his studs into Delgado’s (DAL) shin. This endangered the safety of his opponent, and the referee was correct to show a red card for serious foul play after video review.

SKC vs LAFC: No penalty

Outcome: After review, Los Angeles #30 [David Martínez] did not foul Kansas City #93 [Shapi Suleymanov] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty.

Length of Review: 2:13

PRO’s opinion: The referee awarded a penalty for a tripping offense because he believed that Martínez (LAFC) did not play the ball and had made contact with Suleymanov’s (SKC) left foot as he shot at goal. The VAR determined that Martínez had first played the ball away, and Suleymanov initiated the contact that followed. The referee was correct to rescind the penalty after video review.
