The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.
Matchday 5 overview
There were six Video Reviews during Matchday 5.
CLT vs SJ: Red card (DOGSO)
Outcome: After review, Charlotte #4 [Andrew Privett] fouled San Jose #19 [Preston Judd] inside the penalty area.
The final decision was a penalty [to San Jose Earthquakes] and a red card to Charlotte #4 for a holding offense with no attempt to play the ball which denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.
Length of Review: 3:00
PRO’s opinion: Privett (CLT) held Judd (SJ) with both arms and forced him to ground, and the penalty decision was correct. The VAR recommended an on-field review because he believed the hold by Privett was part of a challenge for the ball, and this merited a yellow card and not a red card because the ball was in very close proximity. This is a subjective call, and the referee determined that the holding foul was not an attempt to challenge for the ball. He maintained his original decision to issue a red card for a holding offense with no attempt to play the ball which denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.
MIN vs LA: Penalty kick
Outcome: After review, Los Angeles #4 [Maya Yoshida] committed a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.
The final decision was a penalty kick [to Minnesota United].
Length of review: 1:59
PRO’s opinion: This was a handball offense by Yoshida (LA), whose right arm acted as a barrier in an attempt to block Joseph Rosales’ (MIN) shot. The ball struck his hand and arm, which was high and away from his body. The referee was correct to award a penalty kick after video review.
The final decision was a penalty [to New York Red Bulls].
Length of Review: 3:58
The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to New York City FC].
Length of Review: 1:39
