The Definitive Angle: MLS Matchday 2

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Matchday 2 overview
There were three Video Reviews during Matchday 2.

PHI vs CIN: Goal

Outcome: After review, no offside offense was committed by Philadelphia #10 [Dániel Gazdag] in the build up to the goal by Philadelphia #9 [Tai Baribo].

The final decision was a goal [to Philadelphia Union].

Length of review: 2:13

PRO’s opinion: Tah Anunga (CIN) reached to intercept Kai Wagner’s (PHI) pass and redirected it to Gazdag (PHI), who was in a clear onside position when the ball was last played by his teammate. The referee was correct to award the goal after video review.

MIN vs MTL: No penalty kick

Outcome: After review, Montréal #13 [Luca Petrasso] did not foul Minnesota #9 [Kelvin Yeboah] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty and play restarted with a drop ball [to CF Montréal]. The yellow card to Montréal #13 was rescinded.

Length of Review: 3:58

PRO’s opinion: From the referee’s angle, it appeared that Petrasso (MTL) tripped Yeboah (MIN) inside the penalty area. The referee awarded a penalty kick and a yellow card to Petrasso for the denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity with an attempt to play the ball. However, Petrasso played the ball in a fair manner with his foot immediately prior to the contact with his hip to Yeboah and the referee was correct to rescind the penalty and the yellow card after video review.

NE vs CLB: No penalty kick

Outcome: After review, Columbus #7 [Dylan Chambost] did not commit a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty and play restarted with a drop ball [to Columbus Crew].

Length of Review: 3:00

PRO’s opinion: In an attempt to block Carles Gil’s (NE) free kick, Chambost (CLB) jumped, with his arm extended away from his body, and was hit by the ball. The referee awarded a penalty kick because he believed that the ball had hit Chambost’s arm. The referee was correct to rescind the penalty after video review because the ball clearly struck Chambost’s torso.
