Week 36 overview There were six Video Reviews during Week 36.
CLB vs MIA : Penalty
What happened: After review, Miami #17 [Ian Fray] committed a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.
The final decision was penalty [to Columbus Crew].
Length of review: 2:45
PRO’s opinion: Fray (MIA) lunged to block a cross by Steven Moreira (CLB) and the ball hit his hand. Fray had his hand away from his body and made himself unnaturally bigger. The referee correctly awarded a penalty for this handball offense after video review.
SJ vs DAL : Penalty
What happened: After review, San Jose #4 [Bruno Wilson] fouled Dallas #77 [Bernard Kamungo] inside the penalty area.
The final decision was penalty [to FC Dallas].
Length of Review: 2:40
PRO’s opinion: Wilson (SJ) charged Kamungo (DAL) in the back in an unfair manner as the attacker controlled the ball on his chest. The referee correctly awarded the penalty after video review.
NYC vs CIN: Penalty
What happened: After review, Cincinnati #32 [Ian Murphy] fouled New York #8 [Andrés Perea] inside the penalty area.
The final decision was penalty [to New York City].
Length of Review: 3:29
PRO’s opinion: Murphy (CIN) reached for the ball, but did not play it and instead made contact with Perea’s (NYC) foot. This forced Pereato the ground. The referee correctly awarded the penalty after video review.
RSL vs MIN: Red card (spitting)
What happened: After review, Salt Lake #4 [Brayan Vera] committed an act of violent conduct on Minnesota #15 [Michael Boxall].
The final decision was a red card to Salt Lake #4 for violent conduct. Play restarted with a direct free kick [to Portland Timbers].
Length of Review: 3:28
PRO’s opinion: As Minnesota United prepared to defend a throw in, there was contact between Vera (RSL) and Boxall (MIN) before play restarted. This incident led to a mass confrontation and Boxall and Cristian Arango (RSL) both received a yellow card. During the check, the VAR saw that Vera had deliberately spitted at Boxall as he approached him. The referee correctly issued a red card for the spitting offense after video review.
TOR vs RBNY: Penalty
What happened: After review, Toronto #27 [Shane O’Neill] fouled New York #9 [Lewis Morgan] inside the penalty area.
The final decision was penalty [to New York Red Bulls].
Length of Review: 2:55
PRO’s opinion: O’Neill (TOR) did not play the ball when he challenged Lewis Morgan (RBNY); instead, he made contact with his opponent’s legs using his body tripping him.. The referee initially determined that Morgan was off-balance and already going to ground, but he was correct to award a penalty after video review because the O’Neill slid into the legs of Morgan who was then not able to continue with the ball.
LAFC vs STL: No penalty kick
What happened: After review, St Louis #2 [Jake Nerwinski] did not commit a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.
The final decision was no penalty, and the yellow card to St Louis #2 was rescinded. Play restarted with a corner kick [to Los Angeles Football Club].
Length of Review: 3:35
PRO’s opinion: While the ball struck the arm of Nerwinski (STL), he did not make his body unnaturally bigger when he attempted to block the shot by Mateusz Bogusz (LAFC). This was not a punishable handball offense, and the referee correctly rescinded the penalty after video review.
