The Definitive Angle: MLS Week 35

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Week 35 overview
There were four Video Reviews during Week 35.

MIA vs CLT: No penalty kick

What happened: After review, Charlotte #29 [Adilson Malanda] did not foul Miami #20 [Diego Gómez] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty, and the yellow card to Charlotte #29 was rescinded. Play restarted with a drop ball [to Charlotte FC].

Length of Review: 2:02

PRO’s opinion: The referee determined that Malanda (CLT) made contact with Gómez’s (MIA) body first and awarded a penalty. He issued Malanda with a yellow card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity with an attempt to play the ball and a subsequent red card. However, Malanda played the ball fairly, and the referee correctly rescinded the penalty and the yellow card after video review.

ATX vs RSL: Penalty

What happened: After review, Austin #33 [Owen Wolff] committed a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.

The final decision was penalty [to Real Salt Lake].

Length of review: 1:36

PRO’s opinion: Diogo Gonçalves (RSL) chipped a pass into the penalty area, and in an effort to block it, Wolff (ATX) moved his leg and body toward the ball. However, the ball struck his arm, which was away from his body, and the referee correctly awarded a penalty for this handball offense after video review.

CHI vs TOR: Penalty

What happened: After review, Chicago #30 [Gastón Giménez] fouled Toronto #10 [Federico Bernardeschi] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was penalty [to Toronto].

Length of Review: 3:27

PRO’s opinion: In an attempt to stop Bernardeschi’s (TOR) progress inside the penalty area, Giménez (CHI) raised his leg and initiated contact with the attacker’s shin, forcing him to ground. This contact had a clear impact on Bernardeschi continuing with the ball, and the referee correctly awarded the penalty after video review.

DAL vs ORL: Offside (no goal)

What happened: After review, Dallas #7 [Paul Arriola] was in an offside position during the buildup to the goal by Dallas #23 [Logan Farrington]. Dallas #7 then interfered with play when he touched the ball.

The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to Orlando City].

Length of Review: 1:43

PRO’s opinion: The referee was correct to disallow the goal scored by Farrington (DAL). Arriola (DAL) was in an offside position during the attacking possession phase from a pass from Bernard Kamungo (DAL) and interfered with play when he touched the ball.
