The Definitive Angle: NWSL Week 19
The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.
Week 19 overview
There were two Video Reviews during Week 19.
LOU vs LA: Goal
What happened: After review, Louisville #99 [Bethany Balcer] was onside when the ball was crossed to her by Louisville #8 [Ary Borges].
The final decision was goal [to Racing Louisville].
Length of Review: 2:40
PRO’s opinion: The assistant referee kept the flag down because this was a very tight decision. After video review, the referee retained the original decision of no offside because there was not sufficient evidence of a clear and obvious error.
WAS vs HOU: Penalty
What happened: After review, Houston #2 [Allysha Chapman] committed a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.
The final decision was penalty kick [to Washington Spirit].
Length of review: 3:47
PRO’s opinion: This was a handball offense by Chapman (HOU), who blocked the cross from Tara McKeown (WAS). Chapman’s left arm was outstretched and behind her body which created a barrier that moved into the path of the cross and stopped the ball. The referee was correct to award a penalty kick.
