The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.

Week 17 overview
There were three Video Reviews during Week 17.

HOU vs UTA: Offside (no goal)

What happened: After review, Houston #10 [Andressa Alves] was in an offside position when Houston #31 [Elin Rubensson] passed the ball to her during the buildup to the own goal by Utah #8 [Kate Del Fava]. Houston #10 then interfered with play when she touched the ball.

The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to Utah Royals].

Length of Review: 1:57

PRO’s opinion: Prior to the goal being scored, at the moment Rubensson (HOU) played the ball back after a short corner, the corner kick taker, Andressa (HOU), was in an offside position. The referee was correct to disallow the goal for an offside offense.

HOU vs UTA: Penalty

What happened: After review, Houston #15 [Bárbara Dávila] fouled Utah #24 [Cloé Lacasse] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty kick [to Utah Royals].

Length of Review: 1:50

PRO’s opinion: After the ball was partially cleared by Avery Patterson (HOU), Lacasse (UTA) regained control and Dávila (HOU) then stepped on her right foot and tripped her. The referee believed the contact occurred just outside the penalty area and awarded a direct free kick. He was correct to change his decision to a penalty kick because the point of contact was on the line of the penalty area.

LA vs CHI: Offside (no goal)

What happened: After review, Chicago #9 [Mallory Swanson] was in an offside position when Chicago #21 [Julia Grosso] passed the ball to her during the buildup to the goal by Chicago #41 [Hannah Anderson]. Chicago #9 then interfered with play when she touched the ball.

The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to Angel City].

Length of Review: 2:50

PRO’s opinion: Prior to the goal being scored, at the moment Grosso (CHI) played the ball back after a short corner, the corner kick taker, Swanson (CHI), was in an offside position. The referee was correct to disallow the goal for an offside offense.
