The Definitive Angle: MLS Week 28

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Week 28 overview
There were three Video Reviews during Week 28.

RBNY vs CIN: Goal

What happened: After review, Cincinnati #11 [Corey Baird] was onside when the ball was played by Cincinnati #9 [Aaron Boupendza] before he scored a goal.

The final decision was goal [to FC Cincinnati].

Length of Review: 3:10

PRO’s opinion: After Baird (CIN) scored, the assistant referee raised the flag for an offside offense; however, Kyle Duncan (RBNY) was slightly ahead of him and he was onside when the ball was last played by his teammate, Boupendza (CIN). After video review, the referee correctly awarded a goal.

SEA vs LAFC: Penalty kick

What happened: After review, Seattle #5 [Nouhou] committed a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.

The final decision was penalty and a yellow card to Seattle #5 for stopping a promising attack.

Length of review: 3:00

PRO’s opinion: Nouhou (SEA) lost his footing, slipped, and landed on the ball. As he went to ground, he placed his hand on the ball. There was no deliberate or secondary movement of the arm to the ball. The hand was always natural as he fell to ground and PRO would prefer a penalty kick not be awarded in these circumstances.

VAN vs HOU: No penalty kick

What happened: After review, Houston #31 [Micael] did not foul Vancouver #11 [Fafà Picault] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty and a throw in [to Vancouver Whitecaps].

Length of Review: 3:41

PRO’s opinion: Micael (HOU) did not play the ball but kicked the Achilles area of Picault (VAN) and forced him to ground. The referee allowed play to continue because he saw this as normal contact between two players. This contact had a clear impact on Picault continuing with the ball, and PRO would have preferred a penalty kick to be awarded.
