The Definitive Angle: MLS Week 27

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Week 27 overview
There were six Video Reviews during Week 27.

ATL vs NYC: Offside (no penalty kick)

What happened: After review, Atlanta #16 [Xande Silva] was in an offside position in the buildup to the award of the penalty kick. Atlanta #16 then interfered with play when he touched the ball.

The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to New York City].

Length of Review: 3:50

PRO’s opinion: The referee awarded a penalty for a foul by Strahinja Tanasijević (NYC) on Derrick Williams (ATL). On checking the attacking phase of play, the VAR determined that when the ball was last played by his teammate, Silva (ATL) was in an offside position and interfered with play when he touched the ball. The referee was correct to rescind the penalty and restart play with an indirect free kick for the offside offense.

CLB vs CLT: No penalty kick

What happened: After review, Charlotte #29 [Adilson Malanda] did not commit a punishable handball offense when he blocked the shot by Columbus #9 [Cucho Hernández] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty and a drop ball [to Charlotte].

Length of review: 2:26

PRO’s opinion: Malanda (CLT) had opened his arm away from his body, and from the referee’s angle, he appeared to block the ball with his upper arm. Malanda did not use his arm to block the cross but instead used his chest to make contact with the ball. The referee was correct to rescind the penalty and restart with a drop ball.

DAL vs ATX: Encroachment

What happened: After review, there was encroachment by Austin #1 [Brad Stuver].

The final decision was to retake penalty kick.

Length of review: 1:00

PRO’s opinion: Before Petar Musa (DAL) took the penalty kick, Stover (ATX) had moved forward with both feet clearly in front of the goal line.

DAL vs ATX: Mistaken ID

What happened: After review, the red card given to Austin #18 [Julio Cascante] was incorrectly issued. The violent conduct offense was committed by Austin #10 [Sebastián Driussi].

The final decision was the red card for Austin #18 was rescinded and given to Austin #10.

Length of review: 2:10

PRO’s opinion: Driussi (ATX) reached over the shoulder of Cascante (ATX) and grabbed the neck of Nkosi Tafari (DAL) in an act of violent conduct. In the mass of players, the referee saw the contact to the neck but thought it was Cascante. The referee was correct to rescind the red card to Cascante and issue it to Driussi.

RBNY vs MTL: Red card (DOGSO)

What happened: After review, New York #15 [Sean Nealis] fouled Montréal #28 [Jules-Anthony Vilsaint] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty kick [to CF Montréal] and a red card to New York #15 for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

Length of review: 3:16

PRO’s opinion: Nealis (RBNY) held Vilsaint (MTL) from behind with both hands, impeded his forward progress, and forced him to ground. The referee awarded a penalty for this holding offense and because he felt that there was a second defender, Noah Eile (RBNY), in a position to defend, he issued a yellow card to Nealis for stopping a promising attack. The referee was correct to rescind the yellow card and issue a red card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity in the penalty area without an attempt to play the ball.

SJ vs HOU: No penalty kick

What happened: After review, Houston #31 [Micael] did not foul San Jose #10 [Cristian Espinoza] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was no penalty and a drop ball [to Houston Dynamo].

Length of Review: 1:06

PRO’s opinion: From the referee’s position and angle, it appeared as though Micael (HOU) did not play the ball but made contact with the foot of Espinoza (SJ) and forced him to ground. This was not a tripping offense; Micael clearly played the ball, and any contact after playing the ball was normal contact.
