The Definitive Angle: MLS Week 26

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Week 26 overview
There were three Video Reviews during Week 26.

CIN vs CLT: Offside (no goal)

What happened: After review, Cincinnati #27 [Yamil Asad] was in an offside position when the ball was passed to him by Cincinnati #17 [Sergio Santos] prior to the goal by Cincinnati #23 [Luca Orellano]. Cincinnati #27 then interfered with play when he touched the ball.

The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to Charlotte FC].

Length of Review: 1:45

PRO’s opinion: Before the goal was scored by Orellano (CIN), Asad (CIN) was in an offside position when Santos (CIN) passed to him. This was part of the same attacking phase of play in which the goal was scored. This was a good use of the Video Review system to disallow a goal for an offside situation.

CIN vs CLT: Offside (no goal)

What happened: After review, Charlotte #34 [Andrew Privett] was in an offside position when the free kick by Charlotte #8 [Ashley Westwood] was taken. Charlotte #34 then interfered with play when he touched the ball to score.

The final decision was offside and an indirect free kick [to FC Cincinnati].

Length of Review: 2:50

PRO’s opinion: The referee was correct to disallow the goal scored by Privett (CLT) because he was in an offside position when the free kick was taken by Westwood (CLT). This was a good use of the Video Review system to disallow a goal for an offside situation.

STL vs VAN: Handball (no goal)

What happened: Vancouver #8 [Alessandro Schöpf] committed a handball offense when he controlled a pass in the buildup to Vancouver #11 [Fafà Picault] scoring a goal.

The final decision was that the goal [for Vancouver Whitecaps] was disallowed. Play restarted with a direct free kick [to St Louis CITY].

Length of review: 3:01

PRO’s opinion: This was a deliberate handball offense in the attacking phase of play by Schöpf (VAN), who used his hand to control the ball. The contact is slight and difficult to see with the angles available, but the change in the ball’s spin is clear, and this could only be attributed to a touch of the ball with the hand.
