The Definitive Angle: MLS Week 21

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Week 21 overview
There were two Video Reviews during Week 21.

CLT vs ORL: Red card for serious foul play

What happened: After review, Charlotte #37 [Scott Arfield] committed a serious foul play offense on Orlando #8 [Felipe Martins].

The final decision was red card for serious foul play.

Length of review: 2:26

PRO’s opinion: Arfield (CLT) challenged Martins (ORL) for the ball from behind with his studs exposed, made contact on the heel and Achilles, and endangered the safety of his opponent. The referee was correct in rescinding the yellow card he had issued for a reckless challenge and instead show a red card for serious foul play. This was a good use of the Video Review system to rectify a clear and obvious error.

DAL vs MIN: Penalty kick

What happened: After review, Dallas #23 [Logan Farrington] committed a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.

The final decision was penalty kick [to Minnesota United] and a yellow card to Dallas #23 for stopping a promising attack.

Length of review: 1:45

PRO’s opinion: Farrington (DAL) deliberately raised his elbow out toward the ball to block the free kick from Hassani Dotson (MIN). This was a good, efficient use of the Video Review system to rectify a clear and obvious error.
