The Definitive Angle: NWSL Week 2

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.

Week 2 overview
There were two Video Reviews during Week 2.

SD vs KC: Penalty kick for foul challenge

Length of Review: 1:57

What happened: After review, White #20 [Christen Westphal – San Diego Wave] tripped Red #9 [Bia Zaneratto – Kansas City Current] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty kick [to Kansas City Current].

PRO’s opinion: This was a foul challenge by Westphal (SD), who did not play the ball. This was a good use of the Video Review system to overturn a clear and obvious error.

POR vs NJY: Offside (no goal)

Length of Review: 2:52

What happened: After review, Red #9 [Sophia Smith – Portland Thorns] was in an offside position and played the ball after it was passed forward by Red #4 [Becky Sauerbrunn – Portland Thorns]

The final decision was no goal due to the offside offense and an indirect free kick [to NJ/NY Gotham].

PRO’s opinion: This was a good use of the Video Review system to disallow a goal for offside.
