The Definitive Angle: MLS Week 28

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Week 28 overview
There was one Video Review during Week 28.

LAFC vs POR: Review for penalty kick (handball) – given

What Happened: A penalty kick was awarded to Los Angeles Football Club for handball against Diego Chará (POR). The referee had judged, from his position on the field of play, that the ball had made contact with the raised and outstretched left arm of Chará in the Portland Timbers penalty area after the ball had popped up from a touch by Raheem Edwards (LAFC).

The VAR saw that the ball had only made contact with Chará’s head and never touched his arm. Therefore, a Video Review was recommended. After looking at the footage at the RRA, the referee overturned his original call and re-started the game with a drop ball to the goalkeeper Steve Clark (POR), as per the Laws of the Game.

On-field decision: Penalty kick.
Type of review: No penalty – drop ball.
Final decision after review: Drop ball.
Length of review: 1:42.

PRO’s Opinion: This was an excellent use of the Video Review system to rectify a clear and obvious on-field error.
