The Definitive Angle: MLS Week 8
The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.
Week 8 overview
There was one Video Review during Week 8.
DAL vs MIN: Review for red card (violent conduct) – not given
What happened: A yellow card was issued by the referee to Ricardo Pepi (DAL) for moving his right elbow into the upper chest of Emanuel Reynoso (MIN), as Reynoso turned to move past him. In the VAR’s opinion, the action was violent and worthy of a red card. Having looked at the footage on the Referee Review Area screen, the referee decided to retain his initial yellow card decision.
On-field decision: Yellow card (reckless).
Type of review: Red card (violent conduct).
Final decision after review: No change.
Length of review: 1:50.
PRO’s Opinion: The action of Pepi was reckless but did not involve excessive force. While the arm did make contact, it was not thrown into the opponent with intensity and was not into the face. The Video Review was unnecessary, as the on-field decision did not involve a clear and obvious error.
