The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Matchday 18 overview
There were two Video Reviews during Matchday 18.

DC vs TOR: Penalty kick

Outcome: After review, Toronto #38 [Jackson Gilman] fouled DC #21 [Andre Dozzell] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty kick [to D.C. United].

Length of Review: 2:18

PRO’s opinion: While Gilman (TOR) did make contact to Dozzell’s (DC) foot, he had first played the ball and the contact to the foot was a normal part of the challenge. PRO would have preferred no review and no penalty on this incident.

POR vs RSL: Red card (violent conduct)

Outcome: After review, Real Salt Lake #9 [Morgan Guilavogui] committed a violent conduct offense on Portland #27 [Jimer Fory].

The final decision was a red card to Real Salt Lake #9.

Length of Review: 2:16

PRO’s opinion: After the challenge for the ball, Guilavogui (RSL) deliberately raised his boot and made contact with the face of Fory (POR) while the ball was no longer in playing distance. The referee was correct to rescind the yellow card for a reckless challenge that he originally gave and to issue a red card for violent conduct after video review.
