The Definitive Angle: MLS Matchday 10

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Matchday 10 overview
There were three Video Reviews during Matchday 10.

ORL vs ATL: Penalty kick

Outcome: After review, Atlanta #99 [Bartosz Slisz] fouled Orlando #9 [Luis Muriel] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty kick [to Orlando City].

Length of Review: 2:58

PRO’s opinion: Slisz (ATL) reached for the ball with his leading right leg but was unsuccessful in playing it. He made contact on the back of Muriel’s (ORL) right leg with his left trailing leg. This contact tripped the attacker and forced him to ground. The referee correctly awarded a penalty kick after video review.

SD vs RSL: Penalty kick

Outcome: After review, San Diego #6 [Jeppe Tverskov] committed a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty kick [to Real Salt Lake].

Length of review: 2:25

PRO’s opinion: This was a handball offense by Tverskov (SD), whose left hand/arm acted as a barrier in an attempt to block Braian Ojeda’s (RSL) shot. While his right arm was tucked in and tight to the body, his left arm was raised and moved toward the ball, which made his body unnaturally bigger when the ball struck it. The referee was correct to award a penalty kick after video review.

MIN vs VAN: Goal (no offside)

Outcome: After review, no offside offense was committed by Vancouver #27 [Giuseppe Bovalina] in the buildup to goal scored by Vancouver #16 [Sebastian Berhalter].

The final decision was a goal [to Vancouver Whitecaps].

Length of review: 1:46

PRO’s opinion: When Emmanuel Sabbi (VAN) touched the pass from J.C. Ngando (VAN), Bovalina (VAN) was ahead of the second-to-last opponent but behind the ball and in an onside position. The ball was then passed back to Berhalter, who scored. The referee was correct to award the goal after video review.
