The Definitive Angle: MLS Week 33

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.

Week 33 overview
There were four Video Reviews during Week 33.

HOU vs VAN: Penalty

What happened: After review, Vancouver #45 [Pedro Vite] fouled Houston #8 [Amine Bassi] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a penalty kick [to Houston Dynamo].

Length of Review: 2:40

PRO’s opinion: Vite (VAN) made contact with Bassi’s foot (HOU #8) without playing the ball and forced him to ground. The referee believed the contact had occurred outside the penalty area and initially awarded a direct free kick but correctly changed his decision to a penalty kick after video review.

MIN vs CIN: Penalty

What happened: After review, Cincinnati #23 [Luca Orellano] fouled Minnesota #11 [Jeong Sang-Bin] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was penalty [to Minnesota United].

Length of Review: 4:21

PRO’s opinion: Orellano (CIN) did not play the ball but instead made contact with his boot to the head of Sang-Bin (MIN), who had been first to the ball. This was a foul and a penalty kick.

RSL vs DAL: Penalty

What happened: After review, Salt Lake #6 [Braian Ojeda] committed a punishable handball offense inside the penalty area.

The final decision was penalty kick [to FC Dallas].

Length of review: 1:46

PRO’s opinion: This was a handball offense by Ojeda (RSL), who had jumped with his arm up above his shoulder. He made his body unnaturally bigger in an attempt to block the ball after Petar Musa (DAL) won the header. The referee was correct to award a penalty kick.

POR vs LA: Goal

What happened: After review, Los Angeles [Joseph Paintsil] was onside when the ball rebounded to him, and he scored a goal.

The final decision was goal [to LA Galaxy].

Length of Review: 2:10

PRO’s opinion: Paintsil (LA) was in an onside position when Gabriel Pec (LA) took a shot at goal. The ball hit the near post and rebounded to Paintsil near the far post, and he scored. The referee was correct to award a goal after video review.
