The Definitive Angle: NWSL Week 14

The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.

Week 14 overview
There were two Video Review during Week 14.

LOU vs BAY: Penalty kick

What happened: After review, Louisville #19 [Jordan Baggett] fouled Bay #7 [Princess Marfo] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was penalty kick [to Bay FC] and a yellow card to Louisville #19 for a reckless challenge.

Length of review: 2:50

PRO’s opinion: Baggett (LOU) stepped on top of Marfo’s (BAY) foot and tripped her. The referee’s view was blocked in real-time but correctly awarded a penalty kick and showed a yellow card for a reckless challenge after video review.

LA vs ORL: No penalty

What happened: After review, LA #8 [Meggie Dougherty Howard] fouled Orlando #11 [Ally Watt] prior to the holding offense by Orlando #11 on LA #6 [Megan Reid] inside the penalty area.

The final decision was a direct free kick [to Orlando Pride].

Length of review: 2:35

PRO’s opinion: The review was recommended for the foul by Watt (ORL) and the referee agreed that the holding offense reached the level of an offense. However, the referee identified a foul committed by Dougherty Howard (LA) in the attacking phase of play before the holding offense. This was a good use of the Video Review system to reach the correct outcome.
