The Definitive Angle: NWSL Week 9
The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in NWSL.
Week 9 overview
There was one Video Review during Week 9.
WAS vs NJY: Review for goal (handball in APP) – not given
What Happened: A goal was scored by Yazmeen Ryan (NJY) and awarded by the on-field officials.
The VAR determined that Nealy Martin (NJY) had committed a handball offense in the APP. He saw that Martin had her left arm extended out into the path of the ball, which made her unnaturally bigger and created a barrier for the ball, so he recommended an on-field review.
After Video Review, the referee disallowed the goal and restarted play with a direct free kick.
On-field decision: Goal.
Type of review: No goal – handball.
Final decision after review: No goal.
Length of review: 2:51.
PRO’s Opinion: Martin had used her arm to control the ball and this was a clear handball offense and a very good use of the Video Review system to rectify a clear and obvious error.
