The Definitive Angle: MLS Week 2
The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.
Week 2 overview
There was one Video Review during Week 2.
COL vs SKC: Review for goal (offside) – not given
What Happened: A goal was scored by Darren Yapi (COL) and awarded by the on-field officials. However, when the VAR checked footage of the goal, he determined that the last touch came from Sam Nicholson (COL), who just beat defender Graham Zusi (SKC) to the ball.
When the ball was last touched forward by Nicholson, Yapi was in an offside position before he went on to score. Therefore, the VAR recommended a Video Review for the goal to be disallowed for offside, interfering with play.
After looking at the images for himself at the RRA, the referee agreed with the VAR’s judgment and awarded an indirect free kick to Sporting Kansas City.
On-field decision: Goal.
Type of review: No goal – offside.
Final decision after review: Offside.
Length of review: 2:06.
PRO’s Opinion: This was a good use of the Video Review system to disallow a goal for offside, interfering with play.
