The Definitive Angle: MLS Week 14 (FIFA break)
The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.
Week 14 overview
There was one Video Review during Week 14 (FIFA break).
CLT vs RBNY: Review for penalty kick (foul challenge) – given
What Happened: A penalty kick was awarded by the referee to New York Red Bulls for what he perceived in real-time to be a foul challenge committed by defender Guzmán Corujo (CLT) on Ashley Fletcher (RBNY) within the Charlotte FC penalty area.
However, on checking footage of the incident, the VAR saw that Corujo had played the ball cleanly and Fletcher had thrown himself down without foul contact.
As such, he recommended a Video Review, and having looked at the footage for himself at the RRA, the referee concurred and rescinded his penalty kick decision. He replaced it with a drop ball, which is how the game restarted.
On-field decision: Penalty kick.
Type of review: No penalty.
Final decision after review: No penalty.
Length of review: 2:40.
PRO’s Opinion: PRO would have preferred an indirect freekick be awarded to Charlotte FC and Fletcher cautioned for simulation.
