The Definitive Angle: MLS Week 29 make-up games
The Definitive Angle is PRO’s analysis of the week’s Video Review use in MLS.
Week 29 make-up games overview
There was one Video Review during the Week 29 make-up games.
MIN vs COL: Review for penalty kick (foul challenge) – not given
What Happened: Colorado Rapids appealed for a penalty kick when Michael Barrios (COL) latched onto a loose ball which had been saved by goalkeeper Tyler Miller (MIN). Barrios touched the ball past Miller but then went down as Miller extended his right hand out in an effort to play the ball.
The referee did not identify an offense in real-time and allowed play to continue. The VAR saw that Miller’s right hand had made clear contact on the right foot of Barrios without making any contact on the ball, and a penalty kick should have been awarded.
On-field decision: Play on.
Type of review: Penalty kick.
Final decision after review: Penalty kick.
Length of review: 2:03.
PRO’s Opinion: This was a correct outcome and a good use of the Video Review system to rectify a clear and obvious error at a crucial moment of the match.
