MLS Cup final referee Silviu Petrescu believes it was “a good afternoon's work” for him and his team of officials after reflecting on their performance at The Home Depot Center on Saturday.
Los Angeles Galaxy secured a 3-1 win over Houston Dynamo to retain their title as goals from Omar Gonzalez, Landon Donavan and Robbie Keane cancelled out Calen Carr's opener.
Two of the Galaxy's goals were from the penalty spot, and Petrescu believes he got those decisions right and they contributed to a fine performance from him and his assistants Daniel Belleau and Darren Clark, as well as 4th official Hilario Grajeda.
“For the big decisions I was in the right position at the right time,” 44-year-old Petrescu told proreferees.com.
“In my opinion, we did everything correctly and everybody from the committee was very happy with our performance, including the referees, too.
“It was a very important game for both teams with it being a final. I tried to be more concentrated and not miss any big calls because I didn't want go back at the end of the game and have one of the teams say they're going to blame one of the referees because we missed a call.
“We [the officiating team] deserved to be there as we did everything well throughout the season and that was the case in the final.”
The showcase match marked the end of what has been an action-packed MLS season and also brought down the curtain on David Beckham's career in America with the Galaxy.
A bumper crowd descended on The Home Depot Center for the game and the atmosphere created by the fans in attendance was "amazing”, according to Petrescu.
It's something he would love to see regularly in future MLS matches, adding: “It's always very special when David Beckham is playing, but not just Beckham - Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane – there are some big stars and the 30,000 or so people inside the stadium came to enjoy the game, and we [the officials] tried to enjoy the game, too.
“I think the crowd enjoyed the game because the atmosphere was fantastic, it was like the stadium exploded when the goals went in.
“The atmosphere was brilliant, I want that atmosphere for every game in the MLS.”
